2008 Contest &
Exhibit

The Grove Hill Arts Council
and The Arts Council of Thomasville will sponsor a photography contest in
April, 2008. It is the desire of the Arts Councils to promote an interest
in art through photography. The exhibit will be located in Grove Hill at
the Clarke County Historical Museum and the Helm’s House adjacent to the
Historical Museum.

Categories for Photographs
Trees of Clarke County:
Photographs of trees in Clarke County
People:
Adults, children, babies - portraits or entire figures - alone or in a
group.
Pets: Household
pets - alone or in a group.
Scenes: Landscapes,
architectural scenes, flowers, or any scene that has a fundamental unit of
design or mood of such magnitude that all else is subordinate.
Wildlife:
Animals in natural settings: deer, turkey, birds, butterflies, reptiles, or
insects.
Other: Candid,
un-posed images that captures a meaningful instant in a flow of action
involving people or animals or both, sports action, still life, or photos
that do not fit in the above categories.
Divisions
Middle School: Fifth – eight
grades
High School:
Ninth – twelfth grades
Adults:
Eighteen years and older
General Rules
1. All
photographs must be made by an amateur. An amateur is defined as
someone who does not have significant income from the sale of photography.
2. Photographs
may be entered in the six categories shown above in color, black and white,
or both. No contributor may enter more than a
total of ten photographs of which no more than three may be in any one
category. If the total number of entries exceeds the space available, the
Arts Council reserves the right to select the photographs to be exhibited.
3. All
photographs entered in the Middle School division must be matted with an
image size no smaller than 5x7 and no overall dimensions larger than 16x20.
All photographs entered in the High School and Adult divisions must be
matted with an image size no smaller than 8x10 and no overall dimensions
larger than 16x20.
4. All
photographs must be matted but no glass and no frames may be
used.
5. The
Arts Council reserves the right to refuse any photograph not considered
suitable for display.
6. No
name will be permitted on the front of a photograph or mat. The
Name/Category tags provided by the Arts Council should be affixed so that
the entire tag may be folded behind the photograph during judging.
7. Entries
must be brought to the public libraries in Grove Hill, Jackson, or
Thomasville, Town Hall of Coffeeville, or Grove Hill Chamber of Commerce
during regular business hours by April 11. Name/Category tags will be
provided at these locations.
8. Every
precaution will be taken to protect all photographs, but all entries must be
made at the owner’s risk.
9. The
judges shall make all decisions as to the interpretation of the rules and
all decisions as to any matter not specifically covered by the rules. Their
decisions shall be final.
10. The
Grove Hill Arts Council may use images of selected photos for publicity.
Award winners will be asked to provide a digital file of winning
photographs.
Judging Criteria
Impact – Composition - Print Quality – Presentation
Awards
First, Second, and Third Place ribbons will be awarded in each category of
each division. Honorable mention ribbons maybe awarded. A Best of Show
ribbon will be awarded in each division. The viewers of the exhibit will
select a People’s Choice award in each division.
